"Be careful, Snake," Sigint warned. "This next Cobra is codenamed The Waiting. According to my intel, he was the Unit's administration and accounting soldier."

"Administration and accounting?!"

"That's correct, Snake," said Major Zero, blithely interrupting the conversation. "After the devastation of the war, he rebuilt the British tax system almost single-handed. Don't underestimate him."

"Right."

He turned the radio off and moved stealthily along the sun-dappled jungle path. Just after a large gnarled tree, the path curved around to the right - beyond it lay a small grassy clearing. Snake advanced cautiously into the open space, readying his gun.

In the middle of the clearing was a wooden desk. Sitting behind it in a swivel chair was a balding man in thick-framed glasses, wearing a neatly-pressed pinstriped business suit. The only visible concession to the heat and moisture of the jungle was a glass of water which sat perspiring on the desktop next to a stack of forms and a two-tiered in/out tray.

As Snake drew closer, the man behind the desk looked up at him. "I've been waiting for you, Snake," he said with a polite smile. "There are some forms I'd like you to fill in." He reached into a drawer of the desk and withdrew a gleaming silver pen, twirling it elegantly between his fingers.

"You don't have to, though. You probably have more pressing concerns. So if you want to just keep going," he gestured to an opening in the trees behind him which led to another path, "you're very welcome to do so."

"I don't have time for this," Snake growled, moving swiftly around the desk and onto the new path, keeping his weapon aimed at The Waiting as he went. "Of course. No-one does at first," the man replied, unfolding a newspaper.

As Snake drew closer, the man behind the desk looked up at him. "Oh, hello again," he said mildly. "I had a feeling you'd be back." The Waiting moved a single sheet of paper across the top of the desk towards Snake. "Just a few small items of personal information."

"FINE, JEEZ!" Snake roared, storming over to the desk and snatching up the offered pen.

"Mother's maiden name?"

"After a week on the battlefield, nobody's mother has a maiden name."

"If you say so. Social Security number?"

"!?" Snake grunted. The Waiting raised an eyebrow, but his dry remark was cut off by the muffled crack of Snake's silenced pistol. Maintaining his composure, the bureaucratic Cobra paused for a moment before narrowing his eyes slightly.

"Snake... all my life, I've searched for the perfect ballpoint pen. You wouldn't happen to have one on you, would you?"

Snake shook his head, keeping the gun trained on him.

"Oh dear. I rather hoped you might. Well, in that case... I suppose this is it."

He looked down at the blood rapidly spreading over his chest.

"There won't be a mini-bomb or anything like that, old chap. Budget cutbacks."

The Waiting reached down and moved a lever on the back of his swivel chair, leaning himself back into a horizontal position. Snake watched in silence as he rolled out of the chair and awkwardly tumbled down a nearby gentle slope. "THE WAITING!" he hissed, disappearing into the foliage.
Begun early last year, finished up and posted at the request of *Inonibird... :giggle:

My mental image of Waiting is Clement Attlee, btw. [link]

MGS belongs to Kojima, but The Waiting belongs to me. I'll trade him to you for three Rattatas and a shiny Gyarados.

It's epic is what it is.

I might have to draw up a slideshow movie for this one, if that's okay with you.
